British servicemen grow beards? In UK armed forces its only the Navy who have regulations which allow the growing of a beard but normally thats on a long voyage, as it would have to be full grown before you were given shore leave (my dad was RN 26 years) . All my Army service it was moustache only in British Army, in Norwegian you could have beard or moustache, I see in this interesting article that for tactical and safety reasons the British are relaxing the regs on Beards. So Question is the US military in Afghanistan doing the same ?? I am pretty sure I have seen US spec forces sporting full beards, and I think I saw a photo of the hero Lt Micheal Murphy sporting one. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/highlands_and_islands/6500269.stm Good point about NBC and wearing a mask, would you not think that would be an excellent way of smoking out taliban from caves use gas, their beards are so long they could never wear a gasmask, Gas Gas Gas, in 9 secs !!! ah the fake air force guy is back yet again with a new ID, the Nineteen Questions one got deleted but he is back. Retired from active military equals being a reservist, if you do not know what a reservist is, do not show your ignorance on here.

help needed very quickly (nothing very serious though)? ya see, I gt a general knowledge quiz with my school 2morro morning....and yes, I have left it late to study for it, but I've won every year except last, I believe my general knowledge has deteriorated slightly... how, through use of the internet, can I improve my general knowledge? categories are usually sport, news, maths, and an overall random general knowledge section......occasionally they show us pictures from plavces in scotland and we have to tell what the famous place is etc. massive credit to any1 who can help me out within the next 1/2 hour....
Maradona?...Not a good sport...nasty sad little cheating man? I'm an Englishman, just seen the news on telly about this person.Seen too the Scotsmen who love and respect this man. Let me tell you Scotland. We ...the English are your friends. Not Argentina. We are your backer.I am ...I love Scotland and would (DO)support them to do well in each World Cup.Sincerley I love the Scottish,Irish and Welsh. We have achieved much in this world so do rebuke these people who love to see a cheat beat a good honest English side as in 1986. Winning is from within...not in glorious cups or titles. I dont know about 1966.I was not there but I see in those players like Bobby Moore and his team mates greatness and honour. Please dont support Maradona...he's no good to you.I have seen great Scottish teams...I will always wish Scotland well. We are the British and that is great in itself.
Why are the Scots so insular? I couldn't even get a decent paper to read, had to be the 'Scottish Edition', useless for business, sport, or world news. A flat can be bought for £40,000, a joke, but there are huge swathes of council housing. Scottish education is superior i've been told but where is the evidence for this? The streets are full of yobbos and courtesy and good manners are the exception not the rule. Scotland has more in common with Eastern Europe than Western Europe, its inhabitants are socialist and they exhibit the least initiative, enterprise, and independence than any other part of the UK. Gordon Brown is a typical Scot - uncommunicative, and untrustful, exclusive rather than inclusive. Well at least he can talk, most Scots are so inarticulate it's embarrasing. The sooner Scotland, like the other smaller European nations such as Latvia or Ukraine, learns to stand on its own two feet, the sooner it will acquire some self respect. Somehow though I don't think it ever will.

Do you think your musical likes, define your personality? Musical Taste ‘Defines Personality’ LONDON (Reuters) - Fans of classical music and jazz are creative, pop lovers are hardworking and, despite the stereotypes, heavy metal listeners are gentle, creative types who are at ease with themselves. So says Professor Adrian North of Scotland's Heriot-Watt University who has been studying the links between people's personalities and their choice of music. "People often define their sense of identity through their musical taste, wearing particular clothes, going to certain pubs, and using certain types of slang," North said. "It's not surprising that personality should also be related to musical preference." In what North said was the largest study ever conducted into individuals' musical preference and character, researchers asked 36,518 people from around the world to rate how much they liked 104 different musical styles before taking a personality test. "Researchers have been showing for decades that fans of rock and rap are rebellious, and that fans of opera are wealthy and well-educated," North said. "But this is the first time that research has shown that personality links to liking for a wide range of musical styles." The study concluded that jazz and classical music fans are creative with good self-esteem, although the former are much more outgoing whereas the latter are shy. Country and western fans were found to be hardworking and shy; rap fans are outgoing and indie lovers lack self-esteem and are not very gentle. Those who like soul music can take heart as the research concluded they are creative, outgoing, gentle, at ease with themselves and have a high self-esteem. And if you've ever wondered why people driving expensive sports cars often have music blaring from their vehicle, North could have an explanation. Those who choose to listen to exciting, punchy music are more likely to be in a higher earning bracket, he says, while those who go for relaxing sounds tend to be lower down the pay scale. North is still looking for volunteers to take part in the research. Is David Cameron choosy about what forms of animal cruelty he likes? Why is it that he thinks one brutal blood sport is any better than another? On the one hand you have fox hunting, which has been partly criminalised and badger baiting which is completely illegal. The baiters set dogs on badgers to rip them up and kill them for "sport" and fox hunters who want the freedom to do the same to a fox from the back of a horse. Why not get all upset about all the other nasty blood "sports" like Badger baiting, C'ock fighting, Hare coursing, or neds taking pot shots at cats with air guns? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/8430153.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8430642.stm
Will rugby ever sound the same again? "Commentator Bill McLaren, known popularly as the "voice of rugby", has died at the age of 86. Mr McLaren, from Hawick, retired in 2002 and was appointed OBE, CBE and MBE for services to the sport. He began commentating on BBC radio in 1953 and moved on to television six years later. Should we forget about football in Britain? Yes I know I'm just a silly woman who should be making beds and washing up but at least I don't act like this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7405259.stm What a load of animals. We might have invented the game in Britain, but I think it's about time we dropped it as a bad idea and concentrated on a sport that isn't just a joke. Not only are the fans idiots, but the players are a joke with them caring more about their hair and being celebs than sports people. Even their thick tarty chav girlfriends have taken over the game. Beckham was too tired to last the whole time on the pitch because his wife cared more about having celeb parties so she could get her picture in magazines. Let's face it with the types we have now they're never going to win a world cup again. I remember when we had a decent England captain in Shearer who took the game seriously, and his wife didn't even try use him to sell a story to a magazine every week or try to take over the world cup. My granddad used to be a footballer but the way they act nowadays I'm too embarrassed to tell people I know. He can't believe how much they get paid now too.
Is Rugby too rough for school children? "Rugby scrums should be banned in schools to protect children involved in a sport which is "not safe enough" for them, an expert has warned. Professor Allyson Pollock, director of Edinburgh University's Centre for International Public Health Policy, called for the ban after research into child injuries. The study was carried out during 190 rugby matches at five schools. There were 37 injuries recorded, with 20 taken to accident and emergency." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/10501327.stm I have to admit, I wasn't allowed to play rugby, for health reasons, so I don't really know how rough it is at school. However, I would say that 99% of our best players must have started at school and a ban would seriously damage the sport.

Why do ignorant people only think that USA plays baseball and basketball? Cuba loves the sport of baseball okay it's a national sport there and Fidel Castro was the most upset about the sport being removed from the Olympics as they won all the gold medals except 2. 2000 USA and 2008 South Korea. Are you unaware baseball is huge in Japan , Taiwan ans South Korea. Countries such as Panama , Dominican Republic, Venezuela,Cuba and Nicaragua care more about the sport then Football. Puerto Rico has a love for the sport as well (While they are a Commonwealth of USA they have their own national teams just like Scotland and Wales). In addition many a player comes from Mexico and Canada (which in case of the latter I dare say produces better baseball then football players) I actually do not wont baseball in the Olympics as I prefer the World Baseball Classic (International Baseball championships). To set the record straight Japan won the 1st ever world championships. In fact Netherlands sent a team with majority of players coming from Aruba, Curacao and the rest of Antilles though a few of the players actually do come from Netherlands. http://www.radionetherlands.nl/news/zijlijn/6215375/Dutch-thrashed-by-Venezuela-in-Baseball-Classic Lastly I can't even begin to say how foolish you all are for thinking only Basketball is played in the USA. From both North-South America , Africa, Europe and Australia the game is played by both men and women. Serbia, Croatia, Lithuania, Argentina, Spain and Russia are some of the countries that have strong international programs. In China basketball is one of the most popular sports (table tennis and badminton being other 2). Top flight players don't come from just USA they come from every continent. I can provide examples if you want. 2002 Serbia/Montenegro won FIBA World Championships, 2004 Argentina beat Italy for gold (USA had to settle for bronze) 2006 Spain won FIBA World Champion Ships 2008 USA won gold medal Netball came from basketball as an American teacher miss read the basketball rules. Only international tournament sport is played in is the Commonwealth Games. http://www.netball.org/netball.aspx?id=18
Chris Hoy - Olympic hero, but honestly worthy of a knighthood? Source:- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7566958.stm Now, I was well pleased with Chris' achievements. Like many others this summer, he showed our footballers a thing or to about being humble, showing dedication and representing the true meaning of being an athlete. But a knighthood - is that really deserved? I have to say - if the UK was more consistently successful at sports, would we be liberally applying knighthoods, or is simply that a showing of sporting prowess in the UK is relatively rare, once we do have some success, we go 'mad for it'. I believe sporting knighthoods should be awarded based on career achievements - some which have been awarded I frankly disagree with - Clive Woodward for one. Is there anyone else you think is worthy of a knighthood?

What do women think of this dating profile? I am just wondering what other women think about this online dating profile. I am thinking of contacting this guy but something does not seem right. Am I just being paronoid? BTW...the guy is 34 with no kids and has never been married. Here is his profile: "Hi there. Well, what should I say? I live in western *******. I am not too far from the ******, but it is nice being "out in the country" somewhat. I am a lawyer and while I work hard and love what I do, I try to achieve balance between my time at the office and everything else. I feel the future looks good and enjoy living life! Cheers. I enjoy being on the go and I have a lot of hobbies that keep me busy. I love the outdoors (fishing, camping, kayaking, etc...), skiing, reading, lifting weights, historical re-enactment, writing (I publish literary fiction) and traveling. I’d like to visit Russia, Scotland, and Scandinavia in the next few years. So many places to see. Anyone wanna join me? Let’s see, what else. I hate mornings and love sleeping in on weekends. I don’t mind cloudy or cool weather. I have a large, interesting family (5 older brothers and sisters). Diet Mountain Dew is my favorite pop. I dislike 95% of television, except the News, History channel, and Seinfeld and Cheers reruns. And I am not a huge sports fan, but I will say I like watching football once in a while. So, what am I looking for? Hard to say. I don't think dating should be like shopping for a car where you are looking for specific "features" or something. Chemistry can't be reduced to a list. But, I will say I'd like to find a woman who is energetic and willing to try new things. Someone a little on the adventurous side would be great. Although I have no problems hanging out and laying in bed all day with the right person! A woman who is intellectually curious would be good. I love a good political discussion now and then! Basically, I am looking for a fun girl who wants to share my adventures and grow and learn with me. Well, I don’t want to ramble. Give me a shout if you want to talk more. Ciao!"

harry potter stabbed to death!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in london? Harry Potter actor stabbed to death protecting his younger brother By Adam Lusher and Patrick Sawer Last Updated: 10:19PM BST 24/05/2008 A teenage actor who appears in the next Harry Potter film was stabbed to death trying to protect his younger brother from a knifeman yesterday. Robert Knox (right) with his mother Sally and younger brother Jamie PA Robert Knox (right) with his mother Sally and younger brother Jamie Robert Knox, 18, who acted alongside Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, became the 28th teenager killed in Britain this year, and the 10th in London to die from stab wounds. Relatives said his role as Marcus Belby in the film, due for release in November, was set to launch his career as an actor. Mr Knox was a member of the same rugby club as Jimmy Mizen, the 16-year-old "gentle giant" fatally stabbed in nearby Lee, south-east London, two weeks ago. Article continues advertisement In a statement, Rob's parents, Sally and Colin Knox, said: "Rob was kind and thoughtful and would always help out others – he would always spend his last penny on other people instead of himself. The life and soul of the party, he was very outgoing, loved sports, and would always strike up a conversation with people. "He was respectful to others and adored by all his family and friends. He was an asset to the family." The murder will reignite a debate about youth crime, knives, and whether the criminal justice system is working. Figures obtained by The Telegraph show that out of more than 60,000 people prosecuted for possessing knives since 1997, only nine have been given the maximum jail term. The Home Office and Boris Johnson, the new Mayor of London, have introduced measures including police stop-and-search and knife scanners at schools, pubs and clubs, in an attempt to curb their use. Yet the Children's Commissioner for England claimed yesterday that such measures could fuel resentment. Sir Al Aynsley-Green called the increased police powers "contentious" and told the BBC: "There is a balance here. On the one hand for young people to feel safer by having the presence of the police – but on the other hand making sure the new powers don't create further antagonism by increased stopping and searching." Mr Knox, a grammar school boy, is understood to have been fatally stabbed after trying to save his 16-year-old brother, Jamie, from a man armed with two knives. The man began attacking drinkers outside the Metro bar, next to Sidcup railway station, south-east London. Witnesses said that the attacker had earlier been thrown out by bouncers, but returned in the early hours with several friends. Tarik Ozresberoglu, 17, a trainee steel worker, described how he tried to stem the flow of blood from Mr Knox's wounds then rugby-tackled the attacker into submission. He said that he was chatting to Rob when the attacker appeared. "He pulled out two wooden kitchen knives at least 6in long from his waistband, and said 'Who's going to make my day then?' "Girls were screaming. Jamie, Rob's brother, came over and said 'a boy has pulled a knife on me'. I held Rob back, but he pushed me out of the way and said 'he's threatened my little brother'. "Rob was angry, but he's never started any trouble in his life. I think he just wanted to protect his younger brother. Rob went up to the bloke, who stabbed him four times. "Rob stumbled back, lifted up his top and we saw the blood seeping from his wounds. "I took my jumper off and tried to wrap it round Rob's wounds. Then as I was trying to do that, I saw the guy was still stabbing people. I told my friend Charlie Grimley, who had also been stabbed, to look after Rob. Then I ran over to the bloke and rugby-tackled him into a bush." Struggling to control his emotions, Mr Ozresberoglu added: "I might have felt a hero if Rob was still here, but what I did is never going to bring Rob back. I might have saved more people from being stabbed but Rob still isn't here." He said he thought Mrs Knox was allowed to hold her son in her arms as he lay dying on the pavement. "She was just crying and crying, sobbing 'why my Rob?'." A number of drinkers were hurt, including Dean Saunders, 21, Nick Jones, 19, Mr Grimley, 17, and 16-year-old Andrew Dormer. Russell Wood, 21, said that he saw Mr Saunders stabbed in the neck three times . Mr Wood said: "This guy started accusing everybody of nicking his mobile phone. He made me turn out my pockets. The bouncers chucked him out. But the next thing we knew this chap was outside with about five of his mates. Everybody just tried to get the knife off him and in the process, it seemed, too many people got stabbed." Mr Grimley described how Mr Knox went to his rescue after the attacker "pulled out two knives and said 'Who wants this?'" "Rob was just trying to look out for his mate," said Mr Grimley. "My stab wound had fractured my cheek bone. Rob saw me get stabbed, tried to get the knife off the bloke and was stabbed himself." Mr Knox's father, Colin, was for many years the junior chairman of Sidcup Rugby Club, where Danny Mizen, Jimmy's brother, was a captain. Danny Mizen said last night: "My thoughts are with his family." Kevin May, 42, Mr Knox's uncle, said: "Where's it all going to end? When is this violence and the carrying of knives by young people going to stop? Something's got to be done. Two stabbings in two weeks is too much." A spokesman for Warner Brothers, the makers of the Harry Potter films, said: "We are deeply shocked by the news and our thoughts and sympathy are with the family." A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A man aged 21 has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He is being held in custody. We do not believe the incident is gang-related." The new figures on sentencing for knife crime, released by Jack Straw, the Justice Secretary, were seized on as evidence that courts are failing to heed ministers' repeated demands for a crackdown on those who carry knives. The Tories called the statistics "shocking" and accused ministers of "failing to get a grip" on a big increase in knife crime since Labour came to power. The maximum sentence for carrying a knife in a public place is two years in jail, rising to four years if the offence was committed in a school. In 1997, 4,466 people were convicted of "having an article with a blade or point in a public place", a figure that rose to 7,654 by 2006. There were 60,366 prosecutions over the 10-year period, of which 47,338 resulted in a conviction. Over the same period, 495 people were prosecuted for having a knife in a school. Of these, 479 were found guilty, yet only nine people were given the maximum possible sentence, Mr Straw admitted. James Brokenshire, the shadow home affairs minister, called the findings "disturbing". Knife crime facts * 14 teenagers have been stabbed to death in Britain this year * A third of murders are committed with knives * Four per cent of young people aged 10 to 25 admitted in a Home Office survey to having carried a knife in the previous 12 months * 550 metal-detecting wands and 244 metal-scanning arches have been deployed by the Metropolitan Police across inner London boroughs as part of its stop-and-search operation * 934 knives, guns and other lethal weapons were seized from children in schools between 2005 and 2007 * One in three young people living in inner cities thinks it is acceptable to carry a knife in self-defence, a survey found
